Clear roof replacement is swapping old, yellowed or broken translucent sheets for new clear ones on the existing frame. On this Auckland porch the old sheets had yellowed, streaked with dirt and broken in one section. We replaced them with new clear corrugated sheets on the white timber frame, and daylight comes through again.
Clear roof replacement means taking old translucent sheets off a porch, pergola or lean-to and fitting new clear sheets on the frame. This is one Auckland job where My Homes Roofing Expert replaced yellowed, streaked and partly broken sheets over a timber porch. It covers what we found, what we did and what to check on your own clear roof.
What is a clear roof replacement?
A clear roof replacement is the removal of old translucent roofing sheets and the installation of new clear sheets on the same frame. It is common on porches, pergolas, carports and lean-to roofs. On those roofs the job is to keep rain off while letting daylight through.
When old sheets stop letting light through, or break, the roof does neither job well. Where the frame is sound, new sheets can go on the existing frame, as they did on this job. We handle this work alongside our garage and carport re-roofing in Auckland.
What did the old porch roof look like?
The porch is a white timber frame attached to a weatherboard house. Its roof was a run of translucent sheets laid over the timber frame. The sheets had turned yellow, dirt had streaked along them, and one section was broken.
From under the porch, the problem was plain. Light came through as a dull yellow, and at the broken section there was an open gap in the roof.
The old sheet material is not recorded for this job, so we do not name it. What matters for the decision is what the sheets were doing: blocking light and, at the broken section, no longer covering the porch.
Why does a clear roof matter on a porch?
Under this porch there are glazed doors into the house. The porch roof therefore decides how much daylight reaches the room behind those doors, not just the porch itself.
A yellowed clear roof still keeps most rain off while it is whole. It just stops doing the second half of its job. A broken sheet is different, because it is an opening in the roof over a doorway people use every day.
What did we replace the sheets with?
We replaced the old sheets with new clear corrugated sheets, fitted on the same white timber porch frame. The after photo is taken from the same spot. The frame is unchanged, and the roof is clear.
The full pair of photos is on our clear porch roof case study, one of the real jobs on our projects page. We do not name the sheet brand used here, because the job record does not include it.
Should you repair or replace old clear roof sheets?
It depends on what you can see. This table is a starting point, not a diagnosis.
| What you can see | What it means for the roof | What a roofer would look at |
|---|---|---|
| Sheets yellowed but whole | Less daylight under the roof | Whether replacing for light is worth it to you |
| Dirt streaks along the sheets | Dirt sitting on the sheet surface | Whether a clean is enough or the sheets have aged |
| A cracked or broken section | An opening in the roof | Replacing at least that section, and the frame beneath it |
| Water dripping inside the porch | Rain getting past a sheet, lap or fixing | The sheets, the laps and the fixings |
Replacing one broken sheet can work when the rest are in good order. When every sheet has yellowed, a partial job leaves a patchwork of new and old. On this porch the whole run of sheets was replaced.
What should you check before replacing a clear roof?
- The frame. Look for soft, split or rotten timber where the sheets are fixed.
- Where the roof meets the house. That junction has to stay weathertight when the sheets change.
- The sheet choice. New sheets need to suit the frame and the look you want.
- Consent. Read MBIE’s guidance on building work that does not need a building consent, and ask Auckland Council if you are unsure.
- Safety. Treat clear sheets as fragile. Do not stand, kneel or lean a ladder on them.
On safety, WorkSafe New Zealand’s working-at-height guidance covers roof work in general. A porch roof is low, but it is still work at height.
How do you choose the new clear sheets?
Our guide to translucent roofing sheets in NZ compares the common options. Our polycarbonate roofing cost guide covers what drives the price. For outdoor living areas, our pergola roofing guide looks at the wider choice of roof types.
We quote clear roof replacements after seeing the frame and measuring the roof. The inspection is free and comes with a written quote. Book a free roof inspection or call 022 501 9921.
What Questions Do Auckland Homeowners Ask?
How do I know if my clear roof sheets need replacing?
Look from underneath on a bright day. Sheets that have turned yellow, dirt streaks along the sheets, cracks, broken sections and drips inside are the usual signs. On our Auckland porch job the sheets had yellowed, streaked with dirt and broken in one section, so the whole roof was replaced with new clear corrugated sheets.
Can you replace clear roofing sheets without replacing the frame?
Often, if the frame is sound. On our Auckland porch job the old sheets were replaced with new clear corrugated sheets on the existing white timber frame. Check the timber where the sheets are fixed before you book, because soft or split timber should be dealt with before new sheets go on.
Can I walk on a clear roof?
No. Treat clear roof sheets as fragile, and do not stand, kneel or lean a ladder on them. Roof work is work at height, and WorkSafe New Zealand’s working-at-height guidance applies to it. Look at a clear roof from underneath or from a window, and leave work on the sheets to a roofer with the right access gear.
Do I need a building consent to replace a clear porch roof?
Check before you start. MBIE publishes guidance on building work that does not need a building consent, and Auckland Council can confirm your own situation. We do not give a blanket answer here, because it depends on the structure and on exactly what work is being done to it.
How much does clear roof replacement cost in Auckland?
It depends on the roof area, the sheets chosen and the condition of the frame. We do not publish a fixed price for clear roofing, so we quote after a free on-site inspection. Our polycarbonate roofing cost guide explains the main things that move the price, which helps before you compare quotes.
